The 9th Annual ESG Awards, held on the 21st of November at the Harare International Conference Centre, marked a powerful milestone in Zimbabwe’s sustainability journey. This year’s event was more than a ceremony, it was a testament to how far local organisations have come in integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into their operations, strategies, and long-term outlook.
The gathering brought together corporates, SMEs, thought leaders, government representatives, development partners, and sustainability professionals under one roof. What stood out the most was the shared sense of commitment to building a responsible, resilient, and future-ready Zimbabwean economy. The atmosphere was energetic and hopeful, grounded in the belief that sustainable transformation is not only necessary, but already underway.
The night showcased inspiring stories of organisations that have taken deliberate steps to reduce their environmental footprint, uplift communities, strengthen governance systems, and innovate for impact. From renewable energy adoption and circular economy initiatives to employee well-being programs and transparent reporting, the winners demonstrated that ESG is no longer a “nice to have”, it is now central to competitiveness and long-term value creation.
A recurring theme throughout the evening was the importance of accountability. Every award presented reflected measurable progress, real-world results, and transparent disclosures aligned with recognised sustainability frameworks. The adjudicators assessed not only initiatives, but the sincerity, consistency, and impact behind them. This emphasis signals a positive shift in Zimbabwe: companies are not simply participating in ESG initiatives for recognition, but to genuinely transform how they do business.
The event also highlighted the rising demand for capacity building within organisations. Many leaders expressed a desire to strengthen their sustainability departments, improve their ESG reporting structures, and adopt international standards such as GRI, ISSB, and CSRD. As Zimbabwe moves closer to a future of harmonised reporting and heightened stakeholder expectations, the call for skilled sustainability professionals has never been louder.
As we reflect on this year’s awards, one thing is clear: sustainability in Zimbabwe is gaining traction, not just as a concept, but as a measurable, strategic, and transformative force. The 9th Annual ESG Awards reminded us that progress is possible when organisations commit wholeheartedly to responsible leadership.
The ceremony may be over, but the real work continues. And with the momentum we witnessed, the future looks promising.
Going forward we will also be profiling the great work all the winners have done over the past year that led them to be awarded at this great event.
