Kwekwe Polytechnic Honoured for Best Practice in ESG Integration

Kwekwe Polytechnic was awarded the Best Practice in ESG Integration Award, a recognition that celebrates the institution’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, community upliftment, and strong governance structures. Over the past year, the Polytechnic has demonstrated how education institutions can become powerful catalysts for sustainable development through hands-on innovation, student involvement, and collaboration with local communities.

Environmental Stewardship: Greening Communities, Innovating for Waste Solutions

Kwekwe Polytechnic’s environmental efforts stand out for their depth and community-centered approach. The institution has planted over 100 trees across campus and in neighbouring communities, working closely with local leaders and residents to build awareness on climate change and green living. These campaigns were largely student-led, embedding environmental consciousness into the school culture.

In response to the growing waste management crisis in Nembudziya, Gokwe North, the institution developed a prototype portable domestic incinerator designed to help families safely dispose of diapers, PET bottles, and other non-biodegradable waste. The initiative includes a recycling process that turns waste by-products into usable materials—an innovation that positions Kwekwe Polytechnic as a leader in practical, community-oriented environmental technology.

Social Impact: Touching Lives Across Zimbabwe

Kwekwe Polytechnic has extended its impact far beyond the Midlands, reaching communities across the country through humanitarian support programmes.

Supporting Health Facilities

The institution adopted the Male Medical Ward at Kwekwe General Hospital, supplying bedding, cleaning materials, and essential medical equipment. Students also led health awareness campaigns, bringing vital information directly to patients and caregivers.

On 12 September 2024, the Polytechnic donated linen to Nembudziya Hospital, improving patient comfort and the quality of care in the rural Gokwe North community.

Reaching Vulnerable Families

Kwekwe Polytechnic demonstrated compassion through multiple targeted interventions:

  • 1 March 2025: Food donation to a vulnerable family in Gutu.
  • 8 March 2025: Distribution of 50 food hampers to families in Gokwe Centre.

These acts of kindness continue to strengthen community trust while embodying the institution’s commitment to social responsibility.

Caring for the Elderly

Students and staff visited Amaveni Old People’s Home, where they donated food hampers, toiletries, and warm clothing. They also facilitated intergenerational dialogue sessions, creating meaningful interactions that foster empathy, respect, and social cohesion.

Supporting Children in Need

Kwekwe Polytechnic has become a pillar of hope for young people:

  • At Maryward Children’s Home, the institution donated educational materials and organised mentorship and storytelling sessions led by students.
  • Through educational outreach programmes, students supplied stationery and school satchels to Mlala Primary School and Somalala Primary School, encouraging academic excellence and motivating learners in under-resourced communities.

A Model Institution for ESG-Driven Education

Through purposeful action, innovation, and a strong moral compass, Kwekwe Polytechnic continues to demonstrate what it means to integrate ESG principles into the heart of institutional culture. Their initiatives reflect an understanding that sustainability is not a slogan—it is a lived commitment to improving the environment, uplifting communities, and shaping responsible citizens.

This award recognizes the Polytechnic’s leadership in shaping a greener, more compassionate, and more resilient Zimbabwe.
