From Compliance to Impact: The Stick, Carrot and Tree of Sustainability

At the 3rd Annual ESG Network Zimbabwe Strategy Workshop, sustainability was presented not just as a responsibility, but as a powerful competitive advantage for businesses. The session highlighted three strategic approaches to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) integration: the Stick, the Carrot, and the Tree. The Stick represents the compliance-driven approach, where companies focus primarily on meeting regulatory requirements to avoid penalties, reputational damage, or loss of market access. While this approach can help maintain a license to operate in the short term, organisations that treat sustainability as merely a compliance exercise risk falling behind as global ESG standards become stricter and more interconnected.

The Carrot and the Tree, however, demonstrate how sustainability can move beyond compliance to become a source of innovation and long-term value creation. The Carrot highlights the benefits businesses gain from proactively embedding ESG into their operations, such as attracting conscious customers, improving risk management, and driving innovation through sustainable business practices. The Tree, by contrast, represents the broader, collective value of sustainability. It emphasises ecosystem thinking, collaboration, and purpose-driven business models that create shared value for society and the environment. Together, these three perspectives illustrate that while compliance may start the journey, the real opportunity lies in using sustainability strategically to strengthen businesses and contribute to a more resilient and inclusive economy.
