Capacity Building Success: NRZ SHE Department
The ESG Network Zimbabwe is proud to have successfully conducted a capacity building program for the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) SHE Department. This was done as a fulfillment to its mandate to empower businesses, government agencies, and other stakeholders to integrate sustainable practices, ethical governance and social responsibility into organization’s operations and decision making. The organization has another mandate to scale up ESG awareness and training programs and services to enhance ESG integrity in Zimbabwe.
Capacity Building Overview
The one-day training, held on the 6th of February, covered essential ESG topics, including:
1. ESG Fundamentals: Understanding the principles and importance of ESG in business operations.
2. Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating ESG-related risks in the railway sector.
3. Sustainability Reporting: Best practices for reporting ESG performance and progress.
4. Stakeholder Engagement: Effective strategies for engaging with stakeholders on ESG issues.
This comprehensive capacity building aimed to intervene in the following:
- Conduct a basic ESG current status assessment
- Facilitate the formulation of an ESG Policy and Framework for the Company
- Define the requirements for a credible ESG Report which meets international best practice.
- Design an ESG implementation road map
- Conduct ESG awareness training for staff and management
The ESG Network Zimbabwe will continue to support the NRZ SHEQ Department in their ESG journey through:
1. Mentorship: Providing guidance and support to ensure successful ESG implementation.
2. Resources: Sharing relevant ESG tools {e.g. ESG Vision Pro}, templates, and research to facilitate knowledge sharing.
3. Networking: Facilitating connections with other organizations and experts in the ESG field.
The network has since trained Sustainability Champions from Econet Wireless Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) among some of the established organizations.
The Network’s Executive Director Mr. Willard Razawo has also been involved in ESG awareness programs as a speaker at several conferences notably at the Zimswitch Electronic Payments Conference and the Corporate Governance and Procurement Conference hosted by the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (PRAZ) and the Corporate Governance Unity in the previous years and many more to come in this year.
