Building an ESG strategy that reflects African and local realities

Global ESG frameworks and standards have played an important role in shaping how organizations think about sustainability and governance. However, effective ESG strategies cannot be developed in abstraction. They must be grounded in the social, economic, and environmental realities in which organizations operate.

For African and Zimbabwean organizations, ESG priorities often extend beyond carbon and disclosures alone. Issues such as community impact, employment creation, supply chain resilience, governance structures, and access to resources play a central role in defining what responsible business looks like. An ESG strategy that ignores these realities risks being disconnected, ineffective, or perceived as performative.

At the same time, organizations must still respond to global expectations — whether driven by investors, partners, customers, or international reporting frameworks. The challenge, therefore, is not choosing between global best practice and local relevance but strategically integrating the two.

The ESG Strategy Workshop Retreat – Vumba 2026 provides a platform for organizations to explore this balance. Participants are encouraged to interrogate how ESG frameworks can be adapted, contextualized, and applied in ways that reflect local priorities while maintaining credibility and alignment with international standards.

By grounding ESG strategy in context, organizations can build approaches that are not only compliant, but meaningful, delivering real value to both the organization and the communities and environments in which it operates.
