November is a significant month for health awareness, bringing attention to several important health issues that affect individuals, workplaces and communities. From Men’s Health Awareness (Movember) and Diabetes Awareness to World Pneumonia Day (12 November), World Prematurity Day (17 November) and World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (18–24 November), the month provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of health and wellbeing in building sustainable societies.
But what does this mean for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)?
Health is a fundamental part of the Social pillar of ESG. Businesses cannot achieve meaningful sustainability without prioritising the wellbeing of their employees, customers and communities. Healthy workplaces promote productivity, improve employee morale and contribute to organisational resilience.
November’s health observances also highlight opportunities for businesses to move beyond awareness campaigns and take meaningful action through workplace wellness programmes, regular health screenings, mental health support, occupational safety initiatives and community health partnerships.
There is also a strong connection between environmental sustainability and public health. Air pollution, poor waste management, unsafe water and exposure to harmful substances demonstrate how environmental practices directly influence human wellbeing. Responsible businesses must therefore recognise that protecting the environment is also about protecting people’s health.
From a governance perspective, organisations should embed health and safety into their policies, risk management systems and sustainability reporting, ensuring that employee and community wellbeing remain long-term priorities.
Ultimately, sustainability is about people as much as it is about the planet. As we recognise the various health campaigns taking place in November, businesses are encouraged to turn awareness into action and make health and wellbeing an integral part of their ESG commitments.
A truly responsible business does not only protect the environment; it also invests in healthier people, stronger communities and a more sustainable future.
