Many organizations rush into ESG by adopting frameworks, drafting policies, or publishing reports. While these steps are important, they often come before a more fundamental exercise: asking the right strategic questions.
Effective ESG strategy starts with understanding why ESG matters to the organization. What risks does it help manage? What opportunities does it unlock? Which stakeholders matter most, and what are their expectations? Without clear answers to these questions, ESG initiatives risk becoming reactive and fragmented.
Asking the right questions also helps organizations avoid imitation. ESG strategies should not be copied from peers or competitors without reflection. What works for one organization may be irrelevant or impractical for another.
By slowing down and engaging in strategic questioning, organizations create a stronger foundation for ESG, one that supports relevance, credibility, and long-term impact.
